Sauna Heater Size & kW Calculator

Accurate sizing is critical for safety and performance. Use our Sauna Heater Sizer to determine the required Kilowatts based on your width, depth, and height, adjusted for glass and stone heat loss as well as internal or external factors. Guaranteed to deliver 175F in under 45 minutes.

How to Choose the Right Heater for Perfect Sauna Experience

The heater is what makes or breaks a sauna. Not the wood. Not the bench height. The heater determines how fast the room comes up to temperature, how the steam feels on your skin, and whether you actually use the sauna three years from now or let it collect dust.

We carry electric heaters and wood burning stoves from Harvia, HUUM, Finlandia and Scandia. Compact home builds to large commercial rooms. If you know what you want, browse below. If you do not, read on or check out our guide on How to choose the right Sauna Heater.

  • Correct Room Sizing: Size your heater to the cubic volume of the room — length times width times height. Glass walls and non insulated walls lose heat faster than wood, so add roughly one extra cubic foot for every square foot of those surfaces. Never undersize. A heater running beyond its rating will wear out its heating elements ahead of schedule and never reach the temperatures a good sauna session requires.
  • Heater Type Options: Choose electric for push-button convenience and consistency, or wood-burning for a traditional, fire-driven ritual.
  • Heater Type Options: Electric heaters are consistent. You set the temperature, you get the temperature. Wood burning stoves work differently — you manage the fire, not the other way around. Both are legitimate choices. Neither is universally better. What matters is which ritual fits your life.
  • Stone Capacity Matters: More stones, softer steam. That is the whole equation. High stone mass heaters produce gentle, long-lasting steam when you pour water over them. Lower mass heaters heat up faster but the steam is sharper. Most buyers underestimate how much this affects the overall experience.
  • Control Compatibility: Some units run on built-in dials. Others need an external digital or WiFi controller. WiFi control is worth the investment. Owners who can preheat from their phone use their saunas twice as often — the one-hour warm-up window is the single biggest barrier to daily use, and WiFi removes it entirely.
  • Mounting and Space Planning: Wall-mounted electric heaters free up floor space. Floor-standing wood burning stoves anchor the room visually and hold more stones. If the sauna is small, go wall-mounted. If the room has the square footage, a floor-standing unit earns its place.
  • Safety and Installation: Hire a licensed electrician. This is not a DIY job. Proper clearances and a dedicated circuit are non-negotiable. Get it wrong and you void the warranty before the first session.

Most Common Questions About Sauna Heaters

Sizing, brand selection, installation. Those are the three things buyers ask about most. Here are direct answers.

What is the best brand of sauna heater?

Harvia for reliability. Parts are widely available across the US and the heaters heat up fast. HUUM for design and steam quality — the stone capacity is higher than anything else at the price point, and the steam is noticeably softer. Scandia and Saunacore for heavy-duty or commercial use. Pick based on what you actually care about.

How do I pick a sauna heater?

Calculate cubic volume. Adjust for glass and non insulated walls. Choose your fuel type. Decide on control style. In that order. Call us if the math is giving you trouble — we size heaters every day.

How far from the floor should a sauna heater be?

Generally 5 to 7 inches. That gap pulls cold air in from the bottom and drives the convection loop that distributes heat evenly. Check your specific manual — clearances vary by model.

How do I calculate sauna heater size?

Length times width times height gives you cubic feet. Add 10 to 15 percent for glass doors or non insulated walls. Match that adjusted number to the heater's kW rating. Do not oversize either — a heater with too much power for the room cycles inefficiently and shortens heating element life. As a rule of thumb, a common baseline is 1kW per 50 cu. of sauna space.

Where is the best place to put a sauna heater?

Front or side wall, near the door. Fresh air comes in low, gets heated, rises, circulates. That placement drives the whole convection pattern. Putting a heater in a corner or against a back wall fights the physics of the room.

Is HUUM or Harvia better?

We recommend HUUM for anyone who prioritizes steam quality and aesthetics. The stone capacity is higher, the steam is softer, and the design holds up in a premium interior. Harvia is the right call for buyers who want proven reliability, fast heat-up, and easy parts access across the US. Both are excellent heaters. They are just excellent at different things.

What size sauna stove do I need?

Match the kW rating to your adjusted cubic footage. Never undersize. A heater running at full capacity constantly will burn out its heating elements faster and never reach the temperatures that make a sauna worth building.
